Chapter 12
Three Married Daughters

About a week after Bingley and Jane were engaged, Elizabeth had a visitor Lady Catherine de Bourge, After greeting Mrs.Bennet quite ungraciously, Lady Catherine demanded to see Elizabeth alone. Two days ago I learned that you were engaged to my nephew, Mr. Darcy. I’m certain this must be an outrageous lie, but still, I had to find out for myself. If you believe it to be impossible, I wonder why you took the trouble of coming so far, Elizabeth said, Can you tell me there’s no truth to this outrageous lie? Lady Catherine demanded. A few days later, Bingley came to visit with Mr. Darcy wishing to be alone with Jane, he suggested a walk, soon he and Jane were lagging behind Elizabeth and Darcy. You are too kind to trifle with me,Darcy said. If you feel about me as you did last year, please tell me so at once, my feelings for you are unchanged, but just one word from you will silence me forever. Then he told her how much he cared for her, she was unable to look at him, but she listened closely, everything he said made his love more valuable. They walked on without knowing where they were going, as they talked, she learned that she owed all her happiness to Lady Catherine, She did immediately gone to Darcy after leaving the Bennets house. Once I convinced him of your sister  love, he was too happy to be angry, Elizabeth smiled at how easily Darcy had directed his friend, but she said nothing. Darcy had not yet learned to be the target of daughter. It was rather too early to begin, they walked for miles because there was so much to say and to feel then at last, all was settled between them, now the happy news must be shared with her family. Elizabeth told Jane and then her father, they could scarcely believe her, it took Elizabeth some time to explain her change of heart, then she told them what Darcy had done for Lydia, her mother needed no explanations, When Elizabeth told her of the engagement, she sat quite still, unable to say a word, then she got up, sat down, and blessed herself finally, Mrs. Bennet said, Good gracious. She was still often nervous and always silly after Elizabeth’s marriage, Mr. Bennet missed her very much. He took great delight in visiting Pemberly, however especially when he was not expected, Jane and Bingley remained at Netherfield a year and then moved to Derbyshire, Jane and Elizabeth were now only 30 miles apart, which added to their happiness. Lydia invited her also, but Mr.Bennet always forbade it,mary remained at home, for her mother couldn’t bear to be without a daughter’s company Mr. Wickham was never allowed to visit Pemberly, but Elizabeth often sent money to him and Lydia, since they always seemed to need it For Elizabeth sake, Darcy also helped Wickham in his profession Georgiana Darcy now lived at Pemberly. She and Elizabeth grew to love each other at first, Georgiana was astonished at the lively way Elizabeth spoke to her older brother. For a time, Darcy wouldn’t write to her or visit Rosings, but Elizabeth eventually persuaded him to reconcile with her, the Gardiners visited Pemberly often. Darcy and Elizabeth loved them, they never forgot that it was the Gardiners who had brought them together.

After two days, Mr. Bennet returned home, he received a letter from Mr. Gardiner. After reading it he went out walking, when Elizabeth and Jane found him, he handed the letter to Elizabeth. She read: At last I have news of my niece. I have seen them both. They are not yet married. But if you consent to the following agreement...

And she must not live more than 10 miles away, I couldn’t bear it Mr. Bennet let her talk while the servants were present. A long argument followed, but Mr. Bennet was firm, he refused to give Lydia a single pound for clothes. As Elizabeth listened, she thought of Mr.Darcy now she was sorry she told him about Lydia and Wickham, yet the situation was hopeless. She finally understood that she and Darcy would have suited each other perfectly, her live liness would have softened his stiff manner. Mr. Gardiner wrote once more to say the marriage would take place in a few days, Wickham would be joining the army and then be moving north. Before he left, he and Lydia hoped to visit the family, Jane and Elizabeth felt that Lydia should be allowed to visit, they urged Mr. Bennet so earnestly that he finally agreed,Wickham and Lydia came. She demanded congratulations from everyone. Wickham, too, showed no sign of shame for what he did done, Elizabeth was disgusted, she quickly saw that Lydia cared more for Wickham than he did for her. Her uncle must have given him money Soon after her arrival, Lydia insisted on telling Elizabeth and Jane about the wedding. Elizabeth was burning with curiosity. As soon as she was alone, she wrote to her aunt, She asked why Mr. Darcy had been at Lydia’s wedding her aunt very quickly sent a reply Mr.Darcy had gone to visit Mrs.Younge,Georgiana’s former governess. At first, Mrs.Younge refused to say a word, but eventually Darcy was able to find out where the couple was staying, after meeting with Wickham several times, Darcy worked out an agreement with him by paying for everything. The letter confused Elizabeth, her heart said that Darcy had done it all for her, but her head couldn’t believe it. But this time, it was Mr. Bingley who came to visit. Mr. Darcy was with him. Chapter 9
Elizabeth Changes Her Mind

While Elizabeth finally saw Jane alone, she told her everything except what she had learned about Bingley. But what a blow for Jane to hear about Wickham, It was hard for her to believe that anyone could be so wicked. Wickham did leave for Brighton, Elizabeth was delighted to see him go. But Kitty and Lydia were miserable that the regiment had gone. She was invited to Brighton to stay with Mrs. Forster, the young wife of the regiment colonel. In the last couple of months, she and Lydia had become close friends Lydia was in Ecstasy, Elizabeth secretly advised her father not to let Lydia go to Brighton. Elizabeth had to be satisfied with this answer Lydia left soon after the regiment. With the officers gone, there were fewer Parties, the summer passed slowly, Elizabeth waited impatiently to begin her travels with the Gardiners. Finally, in mid-July, her aunt and uncle arrived. As their trip began, they traveled to many parts of Derbyshire, enjoying each other company thoroughly. Lambton, Elizabeth learned, was only five miles from Pemberly, years ago, Mrs.Gardiner had visited Pemberly, and now she wished to visit it again. Just the possibility of meeting Mr. Darcy at Pemberly made Elizabeth blush. It would be dreadful She decided to speak openly to her aunt, but then she learned that Mr. Darcy would be away from Pemberly for the summer, so off they went to Pemberly. Her spirits were in high flutter as the carriage drove toward Pemberly House,It was a large and handsome stone building, with a stream in front. After welcoming them, the housekeeper led them on a tour of the house, Elizabeth was lost in admiration, the rooms were handsome indeed and decorated in fine taste. Elizabeth blushed and stared at each other. Then he stepped forward and politely asked about her family.Elizabeth’s embarrassment was extreme. Yet she wondered at how changed he was. Never had he seemed so gentle, in spite of everything, she longed to know if he still loved her. When he asked her to introduce him to the Gardiners, she could hardly keep from smiling. Here was her family, which he had scorned, Yet now Darcy was all courtesy Elizabeth was pleased as he spoke to her uncle. Everything her uncle said showed his intelligence and good manners. Before leaving, Elizabeth told Darcy that She did not expected him to be at Pemberly, he replied that he’d been traveling ahead of his party. The next day, Mr. Darcy and his sister came to visit Elizabeth at the inn, Georgiana Darcy was a great surprise to Elizabeth, She seemed as embarrassed as Elizabeth. In a few minutes, they heard his quick step on the stairs, On seeing Bingley, Elizabeth’s thoughts flew to her sister, she watched him speak to Miss Darcy, who was supposed to be Jane’s rival, but Elizabeth saw no attraction between them. After going to bed that night, Elizabeth lay awake for hours, she tried to decide how she felt about Mr. Darcy, her feelings of strong dislike had disappeared, now she felt very grateful. If she chose, she felt she still hadthe power to make him happy, the next day, they were invited to dine at Pemberly all eyes were on Darcy and Elizabeth, No one watched them more closely. Georgiana seemed much too overcome with embarrassment to look at anyone. Caroline had no idea that she was hurting Georgiana far more than Elizabeth, When Elizabeth left Caroline remarked, how very poorly Elizabeth Bennet looked.

Chapter 8
A Letter for Elizabeth

Once day, Elizabeth was out walking alone in the park, she saw Mr. Darcy coming toward her. Before she could avoid him, he came up to her and said, I was hoping to see you, Elizabeth. At first, Elizabeth had a strong prejudice against everything Darcy said, his words showed nothing but pride. But then she came to the part about Mr.Wickham. She read the entire letter, and put it away, they she decided she would never look at it again. Half a minute later, however, she read the letter again. She began to think aboutWickham. She realized she’d known nothing of his past, she remembered his charming manner perfectly, yet she could not recall anything good or kind he’d done. Wickham had said that he’d never slander Darcy, because he’d loved Darcy’s father. But as soon as Darcy left for London, he’d told everyone his story, his slander, in fact, had destroyed Darcy’s reputation. She remembered that people close to Darcy thought highly of him, even Wickham had praised him as a devoted brother, as she thought it over, Elizabeth became ashamed of herself, Elizabeth read the first part of the letter again. She had to give Darcy credit for his observations of Jane, although her feelings had been deep, Jane didn’t show them. Now Elizabeth believed that Bingley had never known Jane was in London. Darcy letters cleared Bingley of all blame. She felt heartsick at what Jane had lost. When Elizabeth re read the part about her family, she felt great shame. Her foolish mother only encouraged them by behaving just as poorly. And instead of correcting his daughters, her father made great sport of laughing at them, now Elizabeth realized what her family’s behavior had done. A few days later, it was time to return home. Lady Catherine paid a last visit to the Collinses, the bossy woman gave them very detailed instructions how to pack. As Elizabeth said goodbye to Miss de Bourge and Lady Catherine, she smiled. Elizabeth felt sad to leave Charlotte with such a husband as Mr. Collins, yet she did chosen him with her eyes open.

Darcy Admits the Truth

Once all after they dined at Lady Catherine’s estate about twice a week, Elizabeth spent her days walking and in conversation with Charlotte. When Elizabeth had been at Charlotte’s for a fortnight, two visitors arrived at Rosings, one was Mr. Darcy. The other was another nephew of Lady Catherine’s. Colonel Fitzwilliam was not handsome, but he was a true gentleman, Elizabeth quickly caught his fancy. The next time Elizabeth came to Rosings, Colonel Fitzwilliam asked her to play the pianoforte. Lady Catherine interrupted, demanding to know what they were talking about. Elizabeth immediately began to play, In the days that followed the colonel came to visit Elizabeth often. It was clear why Colonel Fitzwilliam came he enjoyed Elizabeth’s company, but it was difficult to understand why Mr. Darcy came, he often sat for ten minutes at a time without opening his mouth. Colonel Fitzwilliam said,Elizabeth blushed. She wondered if he was talking about her, she answered with a joke, and he replied in the same manner. After a silence, Colonel Fitzwilliam mentioned Mr.Bingley who he knew a little. Elizabeth changed the subject. As soon as she returned to the house, she shut herself in her room. She’d always thought Caroline was the one who separated Jane and Bingley, now she knew it had been Darcy the angry tears that followed brought on a headache. At first, Elizabeth felt honored by his Proposal, She was sorry to hurt Darcy by refusing him. But when he spoke of her family, the color rose in her cheeks. Wickham has told me how you treated him, you robbed him of everything that he deserved. And it is not only for these reasons that I dislike you. From the very beginning, I saw your arrogance, your conceit, and your selfish scorn for the feelings of others. Now I’m only ashamed of what mine have Been, forgive me for taking up so much of your time. And accept my best wishes for your health and happiness, with these words, he quickly left the house. She felt too weak to stand, she sat down and cried for half an hour.

Chapter 6
Elizabeth  Visits Charlotte

Mrs. Gardiner saw that Elizabeth liked Wickham very much, she gave her niece some kindly advice “Lizzy”, she said, you must be on your guard with Wickham. I have nothing to say against him. If he had the fortune he ought to have, you couldn’t do better. At present, I am not in love with Mr.Wickham, Elizabeth answered, but he is the most agreeable man I ever met. And if he does really become attached to me but it would be better if he did not. Her aunt assured her that she was. It was one of those rare and wonderful occasions in which advice wasn’t resented. A few days later, Mr. Collins arrived at Lucas Lodge, he and his bride to be were going to Kent the next day. Before leaving, Charlotte came to say goodbye to Elizabeth. Though she saw little pleasure in the visit, Elizabeth couldn’t refuse. She agreed to come in March. Sir William would be coming then, along with his second-oldest daughter, Maria. Meanwhile, Elizabeth waited impatiently for Jane’s letters from London. But Jane’s news was sad indeed, after a month, she seen nothing of Bingley. When Caroline did come at last she was not polite, pained Elizabeth. She could no longer wish that Bingley would see Jane again. Indeed the more she thought about it, the worse his behavior seemed. Elizabeth asked her aunt how Jane was feeling. She was saddened, but not surprised, to hear that Jane was often depressed. Then Mrs. Gardiner asked about Wickham. Elizabeth told her that he now seemed interested in someone else, the young woman this name is was Miss King. Wickham had touched her heart only lightly, she believed that she would have been his first choice if money had been no object. Mr. Collins was in his glory, pointing out every detail of the fine house. She wondered how her friend could look so Content, most of the time, Charlotte wisely didn’t seem to hear him.Two days later they were invited to dine at Rosings, the estate of Lady Catherine. Mr.Collins’ triumph was complete,as they entered the house, he pointed out every magnificent detail. Sir William was awed,Maria seemed frightened out of her wits,Elizabeth was calm and curious. He complimented Lady Catherine excessively, and Sir William echoed him. Lady Catherine was pleased with the praise. She advised Charlotte about managing her house, her cows, and her poultry, then she turned to Elizabeth. Lady Catherine seemed very surprised at not receiving a direct answer. You cannot be more than twenty I am sure, she said. I am not twenty-one, Elizabeth said. After a very dull game of cards, Elizabeth was greatly relieved that was finally over.

Chapter 5
Jane’s Disappointment

While Mr. Collins’ feelings for Elizabeth were Imaginary, only his pride was hurt by her refusal. But the house was in an uproar  Mrs. Bennet was full of complaints and bad humor. When Charlotte Lucas came to spend the day, the entire family was relieved. Charlotte was very kind to Mr. Collins. She listened quietly to everything he had to say. In the next day a letter was delivered to Jane. Elizabeth watched her read it, and saw her face fall. When they were alone Jane said,It is from Caroline Bingley. Caroline makes it plain she does not expect  me to be her sister, she must be sure her brother cares little for me. Elizabeth said, Perhaps Caroline sees that her brother in love with you. Perhaps  she the one who wants him to marry Miss Darcy, she trying to convince you that her brother does not care for you. But the case is this, We are not rich enough or grand enough for them. Therefore, she anxious to get Miss Darcy for her brother. The Bennets had agreed to dine with the Lucases and once again, Charlotte listened endlessly to Mr. Collins, there was a motive behind her kindness she was hoping that Mr. Collins would turn his interest from Elizabeth to herself. Early the next morning, Mr. Collins hurried over to Lucas Lodge. There was he declared his love to Charlotte, in everything was quickly settled, and Sir William and Lady Lucas were joyful. that Mr. Collins was neither sensible nor agreeable. His feelings for her were probably imaginary. But still, he would be her husband. In truth, Charlotte didn’t think highly of men or marriage. Yet marriage was the only honorable situation for a woman with little money, and she was 27 years old and  had never been pretty. Then Elizabeth pulled herself together and quickly wished her friend much happiness. When Mrs. Bennet heard of Charlotte’s engagement, she was extremely upset, at the time went by before she could see Elizabeth without scolding her. Not a word had been heard from him. Jane was quiet on the subject. Whatever she was feeling, she didn’t wish to Discuss, but it was a different matter with their mother. At last a letter from Caroline Bingley put an end to their doubts. She said they were settled in London for the winter. Elizabeth heard the news in silent indignation. She didn’t believe Caroline’s hints that her brother was falling in love with Miss Darcy, but she was angry with Bingley’s weakness. At Christmas, Mrs. Bennet’s brother and his wife came to visit. Mr. Gardiner was a sensible it’s well-bred man greatly superior to his sister, Mrs. Gardiner was likable and intelligent. Elizabeth was exceedingly pleased. Jane accepted her aunt’s invitation with pleasure. Knowing that Bingley didn’t live in the same house as his sisters, she could visit Caroline without any danger of seeing him.

Chapter 4
Wickham’s Story

The next day, Elizabeth discovered the connection between Mr. Darcy and Mr. Wickham. She and her sisters, along with Mr. Collins, had been invited to the Philipses for supper and cards. Mr. Wickham had also been invited. Wickham spoke out, Elizabeth, you might have noticed the very cold manner of my meeting with Mr.Darcy yesterday. We grew up in the same house. Mr. Darcy’s father was a great man the truest friend I ever had. When my own father died, Darcy’s father promised to help me. In his will, he left me a valuable living. But his son made sure it was given to another man. He gives his money quite freely to the poor. And he is a very thoughtful guardian of his sister, he can be kind when he chooses, but his pride is always with him. Just then, their quiet conversation was interrupted by Mr. Collins loud voice, he was saying something about Lady Catherine de Bourge. When Elizabeth smiled at the thought of poor Caroline Bingley. And all of her attentions to Mr.Darcy had been in vain. On the way home, she could think of nothing but what Mr. Wickham had told her. When she told Jane, her sister was upset. Yet Jane could not believe ill of Wickham nor Darcy, she insisted there must have been some mistake. Elizabeth’s dislike of Mr. Darcy grew. Two days later, Mr. Bingley gave a ball at Netherfield they Elizabeth arrived in high spirits. She looked around the room eagerly, hoping to find Mr. Wickham, Instead, Mr. Denny told her that his friend wasn’t coming. While she was talking to Charlotte, Mr.Darcy asked Elizabeth to dance. She was so surprised that she said yes. For some time they danced in silence. Finally, Elizabeth couldn’t resist talking about Mr. Wickham, that they become friends Mr.Darcy. Darcy made no answer. When the dance finished they parted in silence,Elizabeth looked around for Jane, who been dancing with Bingley. Jane was glowing when they met with reading her feelings, Elizabeth was filled with hope for her. But surely he does know the entire story, My opinion of Mr.Darcy and Mr. Wickham is the same. The rest of the evening was not pleasant. When Mr. Collins spoke to Mr. Darcy without being introduced, he made a fool of himself. During supper, Mrs. Bennet spoke long and loudly to Lady Lucas, the subject was Jane and Bingley that they would probably be married soon. When Elizabeth begged her mother to lower her voice, Mrs.Bennet scolded her. Then, Elizabeth’s youngest sister Mary sang for the guests. Mary’s voice was weak and her manner affected. The next day at the Bennets’ house was even more embarrassing, Elizabeth had guessed that Mr. Collins might propose to her and she was correct. After breakfast, he asked to speak to her alone. Mr. Collins was blushing. Almost as soon as I entered this house I singled you out as my future wife, he said, Let me assure you that your lack of fortune will be no obstacle to our happiness. But you are too hasty sir, Elizabeth interrupted. You forget that I have made no answer, please accept my thanks for the compliment you are paying me. I am honored by your offer, but it is quite impossible for me to accept. I know it is usual with young ladies to say no at first, therefore I am not discouraged at all. My dearest cousin, Mr. Collins went on forgive me if I do not believe you. My situation in life is excellent. My connection with Lady Catherine makes my offer a handsome one in spite of your many attractions, a poor girl like you may never get another offer of marriage. Therefore, I believe you mean to make my love stronger by suspense. The situation was impossible, Not knowing what else to do Elizabeth left the room. A few minutes later, she was called to the library, her parents were waiting for her. You have an unhappy choice before you Elizabeth,he said. Your mother will never see you again if you do not marry Mr. Collins. But  I will never see you again if you do, Mr. Bennet his wife cried out Elizabeth couldn’t help but smile.

Chapter 3
A Visitor Arrives

When in that evening, Jane was well enough to leave her room for a few hours. Bingley made sure the fire was well built up before he sat down by her. Elizabeth was delighted to see that he hardly spoke to anyone else. While Jane and Bingley talked, Darcy took up a book. Caroline Bingley did the same but she secretly spent most of the time watching Mr. Darcy read. Mrs. Hurst played with her rings and bracelets. And now and then she joined in her brother’s conversation with any other.  She yawned again and began walking about the room, although her figure was so elegant. Now Darcy looked up. Without knowing what he was doing, he closed his book. Caroline invited him to join them, but he politely refused. Elizabeth turned away to hide a smile. And then she said, I am convinced then, you must truly have no faults at all. Mr. Darcy said, I cannot forget or forgive the follies and vices of others, if I lose my good opinion of someone it is lost forever. Elizabeth retorted But you have chosen your defect well, it really isn’t laughable. It seems that your defect makes it easy for you to hate everybody. When the pianoforte was opened, Darcy was relieved. He felt more attracted to Elizabeth than he ever wanted to. If it weren’t for her low connections, he feared that he could fall in love with her. The next day, Caroline teased him about paying so much attention to Elizabeth. When Jane was well enough to travel on Sunday, Darcy was relieved to see Elizabeth leave. Later, when the whole Bennet family was together again, Mr. Bennet announced a surprise. Mr. Bennet explained, This is the gentleman who will In herit our home when I’m dead. He may turn you all out of the house if he likes. Mrs. Bennet cried out, Please don’t even mention that horrid man, It’s dreadful that our home will not be passed on to your own children. How unfair that the property can only be passed on to male heirs. Mr. Bennet said, but if you’ll listen to the letter he sent me, perhaps you’ll forgive him a little. Mr. Collins had been raised by an illiterate and stingy father. He had begun life humbly but he had been lucky. He’d been given a living by Lady Catherine de Bourge, who lived in Kent. His new rank in life made him a mixture of pride and modesty. At dinner, Mr. Collins talked at great length about Lady Catherine. No praise was too high for her. He found Mr. Collins completely absurd. Now he was enjoying himself thoroughly. Mr. Collins’ motive for making amends to his cousins soon became clear. He intended to marry one of them! Jane was his first choice until Mrs. Bennet hinted that Jane was likely to be engaged soon. In that case, he settled on Elizabeth. Mrs. Bennet was delighted, She never dreamed that she might have  two daughters married soon. The next day, Mr. Collins walked with his cousins to Meryton. All along the way, he delivered pompous remarks. His polite cousins agreed with everything he said. As they reached Meryton, however, Lydia and Catherine began looking up and down the streets in search of officers. Mr. Wickham was completely charming. He had a handsome face, a slender body, and pleasing manners. The whole party was chatting very agreeably when they heard the hoofbeats of horses. Determined not to fix his eyes on Elizabeth, he suddenly noticed the stranger. Elizabeth happened to see Darcy and Wickham exchange surprised glances. It was impossible to imagine. And it was just as impossible  not to wonder about this.

Two members of Fagin’s gang, Tom and Toby, were hiding in a run-down house by the river. The crowd was all around him, snarling and trying to get at him. Old Fagin was muddy and bleeding and clinging to the police as if they were his dearest friends. They swore they’d tear his heart out. Some time later, Bill Sikes arrived. He was pale and out of breath. He looked like his own ghost. Charley Bates got to the hideout shortly after that, when Charley saw Bill Sikes, he fell back. The boy and the man rolled on the ground, fighting, the other robbers stared at them, unable to move. There were voices and the clatter of many footsteps hurrying across the nearest wooden bridge. Sikes decided to go up on the roof. He thought that was his one chance to escape. If he could drop down into the muddy ditch below, he might get lost in the crowd. The night rang out with their angry shouts and screams.Sikes tied one end of the rope to the chimney, the other end he made into a noose and brought the loop over his head. Two days after Bill Sikes’s death, a pair of coaches drove to the town where Oliver was born. In one coach were Oliver, Rose, Mrs. Maylie, Mrs.Bedwin, and Dr. Losberne. In the other were Mr.Brownlow and Monks. There, in that hotel, Oliver was told the secrets of his birth. While Oliver listened, Monks confessed to Mr.Brownlow that his mother had taken two letters from his father. One letter was meant to be given to Agnes Fleming. In it, Edwin Leeford confessed that he had made up a story to explain why he could not marry her right away. He reminded her of the day he had given her the locket and the ring. He said that he hoped to engrave his name on the ring some day in the future. The second letter was Leeford’s will. It left little money to his wife and Monks for both had given him much misery. Most of the money was left to Agnes and her child. Monks confessed that he had paid Fagin to lead Oliver into a life of crime. He also admitted that his mother had burned the will and the letter. Finally, he said that he himself had destroyed the ring and the locket that the Bumbles gave him. Oliver’s tears had fallen fast as he listened to the secrets of his mother and father. The others left them alone for a while. Then came a soft knock at the door. When Harry Maylie came in, Oliver excused himself. At last the jury in Fagin’s trial returned. There was perfect silence in the court, within minutes, the crowd outside shouted joyfully upon hearing the news that Fagin would die on Monday. In return for telling the police all he knew about Fagin, Noah Claypole was set free. He and Charlotte now make a living without working too hard. What they do is take a walk every Sunday, in their best clothes. When they are in front of a public house, Charlotte pretends to faint, they became so poor they ended up their days in the very workhouse where Oliver had begun his life. Charley Bates turned his back on a life of crime.Mr. Brownlow adopted Oliver and moved to the country with him and Mrs. Bedwin, they live close to Rose and Harry. It is said that the spirit of Agnes Fleming sometimes comes to that altar. I believe it even though the spot is in a church, and she was a weak and erring woman.

Chapter 11
Nancy's sad Fate

Nancy stopped at the center of the bridge. Soon a coach pulled up, Rose Maylie and Mr.Brownlow got out. Nancy hurried up to them. Creeping just behind, Noah quickly crouched under the cover of a shadow, he was well within hearing distance. We plan to capture Monks and make him confess the secret of Oliver’s birth, Mr. Brownlow told Nancy. Nancy considered his words. I have lived among liars all my life, she said. But I will take your word. Then, in a voice so low that Noah could hardly hear, she told them where Monks was.Within a few hours, Fagin and Sikes knew everything. But they did not believe that Nancy had refused to turn them in, sikes rushed to the door. Without a word, Bill rushed out into the streets, he ran until he got to his own door. Nancy was asleep. Get up,Bill said jarring her awake. At first she didn’t know what was happening. Then, seeing the faint light of dawn out the window, the girl rose to open the curtain. He grabbed the girl by the head and throat and dragged her to the center of the room. On my guilty soul I swear that I have, She grabbed hold of him so tightly that he could not tear her away.I will ask them to show you the kindness they showed me. Then we can both leave this dreadful place, far away–and apart from each other we could have a chance to find better lives.Bill pulled one arm free from her grasp and grabbed his gun. He knew that gunfire would draw attention. So, with all his might, he struck out at her twice with the heavy weapon. Nancy fell on her knees and raised her hands toward heaven. It was a ghastly thing to see. The dawning sun burst upon the city in clear glory. The golden rays lit up the room where the murdered woman lay.but in spite of his efforts it streamed in through rips in the curtains. At last he got up, locked the room, and left the house. Where could he go to get some food? What place was near and not too public? Hendon, he thought. But when he got there, everyone seemed to look at him with suspicion. Morning and noon passed, and then the day was ending, still he walked. When morning came, Sikes decided to risk going back to London, then he could leave for France or some other country. It was late evening when Mr. Brownlow got out of a coach at his own door. Two strong-looking men climbed out, too. Then they helped a third man out of the coach, and led him into the house. After a long silence, Monks gave in. What do you want with me? he asked in a surly voice. When your father was a mere boy, he was forced into marriage with a woman ten years older than he. After years of unhappiness, your father and his wife went their separate ways. The first daughter was a beautiful girl of 19, and the other a mere child of two or three. In time, the older daughter fell deeply in love with your father, and he with her. Within a year, they were solemnly pledged to each other.  Your father had to go there right away for the uncle had left him money. Before he left on the trip, however, he came to London. Monks was now drawing his breath more freely and looking around with a smile. hen the boy was lost to me. Since your mother was dead, I knew that only you could solve the mystery, the last I had heard, you were in the West Indies.

Chapter 10
Fagin's Plan

On the very same night that Nancy met with Rose Maylie, two persons advanced toward London. They were none other than Noah Claypole and Charlotte, the Sowerberrys maid. Charlotte was carrying the money. She thought it was because Noah trusted her with it. But it was not young Noah Claypole’s habit to trust anybody. He had a quite different reason for insisting that Charlotte carry the money. If they were caught, the money would be found on  her. And than When the two arrived in London, they stopped at a public house. By chance it was the very tavern where Fagin often went.Noah and Charlotte sat in a back room just behind the bar. On the dark wall behind and above their table was a pane of glass hidden by a small curtain. Also, by putting his ear up against the thin wall, he could hear what was being said. As Charlotte and Noah were eating, Fagin came into the bar on business. Fagin carefully opened the curtain a little and pressed his ear to the wall. After Noah said this, he looked up and saw a stranger coming toward him. The stranger was Fagin. Noah was startled when the old man told him he had overheard what he’d just been saying.A few days later, Fagin had a job for Noah. He wanted Noah to follow Nancy and report back to him about where she went. Lately, Fagin had noticed that Nancy had been acting strangely. For example, on Sunday night just before 11:00, she had put on her bonnet to go out. Bill Sikes pulled Nancy’s bonnet from her head and pushed her into a chair. He held her down by force. Fagin did nothing to help her. Nancy
struggled and begged until it was past midnight. After all these years, Sikes knew too much about Fagin’s business. And since Fagin would know of Nancy’s crime, he would have more power over the girl than ever.

Fagin liked the idea. But first he had to find out the identity of Nancy’s new friend. Nancy would be afraid
that Sikes would hurt the other man. That would make it easier to persuade her to poison Sikes to protect herself and her new friend. For six days and nights, Nancy went nowhere. Finally, on the seventh night, the door opened just before 11:00. Noah saw Nancy come out. He followed her as closely as seemed safe.

Chapter 9
A Plain Gold Ring

After married Mr.Bumble and Ms.Corney had an argumen, at first Mrs. Bumble had tried to shame her husband into giving in by whimpering and crying. The fight with his wife had made him thirst, so he went to a public house.A tall stranger was the only other customer. I think I have seen you before, the stranger comes to finding Mr.Bumble. Do you remember a workhouse boy who was apprenticed to an undertaker? A boy who later ran away to London?, are you Oliver ? said Mr.Bumble. It’s not him I want to hear about. I’ve heard enough of him, said the stranger. It’s a woman Iwant to know about the old gray haired woman who took care of his mother.Mr. Bumble told the stranger that old Sally had died. But, he said, his wife had heard a secret from her shortly before she passed away. Bring your wife to see me at nine o’clock tomorrow evening, the stranger said excitedly. The next night, Mr. and Mrs. Bumble went to the address Monks had given them. After some argument, Monks counted out 25 gold pounds onto the table. Mr.Bumble said old Sally told me she stole something from Oliver Twist’s dead mother. But I found a pawn ticket in her apron pocket, this is what I got for it. It contained a small gold locket, which held two locks of hair and a gold wedding band, the name  Agnes is engraved on the inside, said Mrs. Bumble. You can see there is also a date a year before the boy, Oliver Twist was born. A few days later, Monks went to see Fagin. Then he took Monks into another room. As soon as they left, however, Nancy slipped off her shoes, tiptoed after them, and listened at the door. The next day, Bill Sikes noticed that Nancy was unusually pale. There was a strange fire in her eyes.Nancy poured his drink while keeping her back to him Bill was suspicious, but then he thought to himself. She brought him the drink, and he drank it down. The maid who had opened the door
hesitated. Nancy’s clothes were rumpled and dirty. Her hair was wild. But she finally let Nancy in and took her up to a small room, soon Rose Maylie came in the door and Nancy turned to the door. Rose spent a sleepless, anxious night. She knew she must tell someone what Nancy had told her. Harry Maylie seemed the best choice. When morning came, she sat down to write him a letter. She took up her pen 50 times, and laid it down again, without writing a single word. Suddenly, Oliver came running into the room, he seemed very excited. Right away, Rose sent for a coach, and she and Oliver drove to Mr. Brownlow’s house. As for Mrs. Bedwin, the housekeeper she had never doubted Oliver’s goodness for a moment.

Chapter 8
Rose and Harry

At the village was in the full glow of its richness. The trees burst out into strong green life, and flowers grew everywhere. It was the prime of the year. All things in nature were glad and flourishing. On ninght Rose became very will. Her skin had become as cold as marble. She had lost none of her beauty, but she was changed. First her face had suddenly become red. Then this disappeared, and she was once more deathly pale. By the time Oliver got back from the village,Rose had grown much worse. By midnight, she was delirious, the village doctor who examined her said the illness was very alarming. The next morning, Oliver crept away to the old churchyard. He sat down on one of the green mounds, crying silently and praying for Rose. All around him, every leaf and flower of summer was in full bloom. How could this be a time for death, Rose could surely not die when the whole earth was bursting with life. That night, Harry Maylie arrived. He was a handsome young man of about 25. His meeting with his mother was full of warm emotion on both sides. They told me you were dying, fluttering between life and death, I was so afraid you might die and never know how much I loved you. I couldn’t bear that thought. Rose was very pale, you have always been kind and noble, she said.My dearHarry, I would be like a great stone around your neck, I would hold you back from rising up in the world. So now I ask you to forget me. But Harry caught her to his chest. He gently placed one kiss on her beautiful forehead and then hurried from the room.

Chapter 7
Oliver's Reconvery

When Bill Sykes was carrying the wounded Oliver away from the house at Chertsey. The two men and the dogs continued to chase after the robbers. It was a very cold night, however, and the men were more than a little afraid. A short time later, they gave up and went back home.As dawn broke, the weather grew even colder. The mist rolled along the ground like a dense cloud of smoke. The grass was wet, and the wind blew with a hollow moan. Finally, as morning brought a hard rain, Oliver awoke. He was in pain. His left arm hung heavy and useless at his side. He was so weak that he could barely sit up. Finally, though, he managed to stand and make his way to the road. He spotted a house not far away. As he came closer, he saw it was the same house they had tried to rob. Oliver was in terrible pain, he had no choice but to knock on the door. While he was looking at Oliver, two women waited. One of them was Mrs. Maylie, a small old woman who was dressed neatly in old-fashioned clothing. The other was Rose, a lovely girl about 17 years old. She was so sweet and lovely, the earth seemed too harsh and rough for her, a thousand lights played about her face. Soon Dr. Losberne came down the stairs to make his report. The two women looked into the room where Oliver was resting. Instead of seeing the rough-faced thief they had expected, they saw a mere child worn with pain and exhaustion. His wounded arm was crossed upon his chest. His head rested on the other arm. The boy stirred and smiled in his sleep. Rose and Mrs. Maylie agreed to the doctor plan. Dr. Losberne went downstairs and had a long talk with Giles. Eventually Giles became very confused. He was no longer sure that it was Oliver who had come to rob the house. By the time two policemen came, Giles was not even sure that he had shot anyone. The police went away thinking Oliver had been shot in an accident. After the police left, Oliver tried to tell the doctor and the two women his story. He had to stop often because of pain and lack of strength.Oliver pillow was smoothed by gentle hands that night. His sleep was peaceful and happy, but Oliver problems were neither slight nor few. One day, at his request, Oliver was taken by Dr.Losberne to Mr. Brownlow’s house. After making inquiries, Dr. Losberne  learned that Mr.Brownlow had gone on a trip to the west Indies, he had left six weeks before.Oliver was terribly disappointed. How he had longed to see the old gentleman again. About two weeks later, when Oliver was well enough, the women took him to a country cottage. It was a lovely spot. The little boy, whose days had been spent in crowded, dirty streets, seemed to come alive in this magical place. It was a happy time. The boys days were peaceful and calm.At night, Oliver would read a chapter or two of the Bible aloud to Rose and Mrs.Maylie.In this way, three lovely, happy months went by.Oliver grew very close to the kind women who had saved him, and they to him.

Chapter 6
Old Sally's Story

The matron at the workhouse where Oliver had been sent was just having tea. She had been alone these past 25 years old since Mr.Corney had died. She heard a knock on the door. It was Mr. Bumble, the parish beadle. Shyly, Mrs.Corney asked Mr. Bumble if he would like to stay for tea. They sat down at a round table by the fire. He drank the last of his tea and finished a piece of toast. Then he wiped his lips and kissed her. Just then there was a knock at the door, it was a poor woman from the workhouse. Mrs.Corney was very angry. She got up and muttered something about old women who couldn’t even die without bothering their betters, as Mrs.Corney followed the wretched woman outside, she scolded her all the way.The poor girl trusted me, and I stole from her and from her baby. In my heart I stole her treasure when she first showed it to me. It was hanging round her neck. They would have treated her baby better, if they had known. Oh, if someone would only help that poor child. Then suddenly she drew back. Old Sally had made a strange choking sound and then fallen back on the bed, lifeless. However, Fagin was growing very worried. When Toby had returned alone from the robbery, he had no idea of what had happened to oliver or sikes. Finally, he had turned his steps toward home. He was about to open his door when a dark figure approached him. Fagin looked at him with scorn. They both walked all around the place but found no one. Finally, Monks left. Did you know the master of the workhouse is worse tonight, my love? asked Mr. Bumble. Poor Mr. Slout can’t live a week, the doctor says. And I shall take his place... Oh, Mrs. Corney, what luck for two hearts such as ours, One little word from you,Mrs. Corney, and everything would be perfect. Will you say that one little, little word. After a long and loving hug with his future wife, Mr. Bumble went out into the cold again. This time he went to Mr. Sowerberry’s to order a coffin for old Sally.

Chapter 5
A Tribble Job

Once day, windy night when fagin went out to visit bill sikes. He and sikes were busily planning to rob a house in Chertsey. Sikes was going to do the job with another obber, Toby Crackit. Toby had been hanging about he fine house for two weeks. But he had not been ble to get any of the servants to join in their plot. The robbers would need a small child to go in the window and open the front door for them. It was decided that Oliver would go with Nancy more willingly than with anyone else. So she was chosen to take Oliver to sikes. The next night Nancy walked out Fagin’s door holding Oliver hand tightly. Oliver thought about calling for help or many people were still in the streets. But it was as if Nancy could read his thoughts. When they reached Bill Sikes the man loaded his gun in front of Oliver. Then he touched the cold metal to the boy’s head. Before Oliver had time to look around, Sikes caught him under the arms. Three or four seconds later, Oliver and Toby were lying in the grass on the other side of the wall. Sikes followed directly. Then they crept slowly toward the house. Now, for the first time, Oliver could see what the men had on their minds. When I put you through this window, go up the steps and along the hall to the street door. Then open the door and let us in.Sikes pushed Oliver through the window. Oliver heard men shouting and guns shooting. For a minute, he felt himself being carried over uneven ground at a rapid pace. Then a deadly cold feeling gripped the boy’s heart, and he saw and heard no more.

Oliver Twist

Chapter 4
The Boy is Kidnapped

Dickens achieves his biting criticism of social conditions through deep satire and hyperbolic statements. Throughout the novel, absurd characters and situations are presented as normal, and Dickens often says the opposite of what he really means.  Since paupers like Oliver stand no chance of defeating their tormenters, Dickens takes it upon himself to defeat them with sly humor that reveals their faults more sharply than a serious tone might have. Though Oliver himself will never have much of a sense of humor, we will eventually meet other boys in his situation who will join Dickens in using humor as a weapon in their woefully unequal struggle with the society that oppresses them. The workhouse board considers sending Oliver out to sea as a cabin boy, expecting that he would die quickly in such miserable conditions. However, Mr. Sowerberry, the parish undertaker, takes Oliver on as his apprentice. Mr. Bumble informs Oliver that he will suffer dire consequences if he ever complains about his situation. Mrs. Sowerberry remarks that Oliver is rather small. Mr. Bumble assures her that he will grow, but she grumbles that he will only grow by eating their food. Mrs. Sowerberry serves Oliver the leftovers that the dog has declined to eat. Oliver devours the food as though it were a great feast. After he finishes, Mrs. Sowerberry leads him to his bed, worrying that his appetite seems so large.

Chapter 3
Oliver Meets Mr.Brownlow

One day in the Parish, Oliver has been flogged and then locked in a dark room as a public example. Mr. Gamfield, a brutish chimney sweep, offers to take Oliver on as an apprentice. Because several boys have died under his supervision, the board considers five pounds too large a reward, and they settle on just over three pounds. Mr. Bumble, Mr. Gamfield, and Oliver appear before a magistrate to seal the bargain. At the last minute, the magistrate notices Oliver’s pale, alarmed face. He asks the boy why he looks so terrified. Oliver falls on his knees and begs that he be locked in a room, beaten, killed, or any other punishment besides being apprenticed to Mr. Gamfield. The magistrate refuses to approve the apprenticeship, and the workhouse authorities again advertise Oliver’s availability. The assumption on the part of the middle-class characters that the lower classes are naturally base, criminal, and filthy serves to support their vision of themselves as a clean and morally upright social group. The gentlemen on the workhouse board call Oliver a savage who is destined for the gallows. After Oliver’s outrageous request for more food, the board schemes to apprentice him to a brutal master, hoping that he will soon die. Even when the upper classes claim to be alleviating the lower-class predicament, they only end up aggravating it. In order to save Oliver from what they believe to be his certain fate as a criminal, the board essentially ensures his early death by apprenticing him to a brutal employes.

Chapter 2
Off to London

Authorities at the workhouse send Oliver to a branch-workhouse for juvenile offenders against the poor laws. The overseer, Mrs. Mann, receives an adequate sum for each childs upkeep, but she keeps most of the money and lets the children go hungry, sometimes even letting them die.On Oliver’s ninth birthday, Mr. Bumble, a minor church official known as the parish beadle, informs Mrs. Mann that Oliver is too old to stay at her establishment. Since no one has been able to discover his mother’s or father’s identity, he must return to the workhouse. Mrs. Mann asks how the boy came to have any name at all. Mr. Bumble tells her that he keeps a list of names in alphabetical order, naming the orphans from the list as they are born. Mrs. Mann fetches Oliver. When Mr. Bumble is not looking, she glowers and shakes her fist at the boy, so he stays silent about the miserable conditions at her establishment. Before Oliver departs, Mrs. Mann gives him some bread and butter so that he will not seem too hungry at the workhouse. The workhouse offers the poor the opportunity to starve slowly as opposed to quick starvation on the streets. For the workhouse, the undertaker’s bill is a major budget item due to the large number of deaths. Oliver and his young companions suffer the tortures of slow starvation. One night at dinner, one child tells the others that if he does not have another bowl of gruel he might eat one of them. Terrified, the children at the workhouse cast lots, determining that whoever loses shall be required to ask for more food for the boy. Oliver loses, and after dinner, the other children insist that Oliver ask for more food at supper. His request so shocks the authorities that they offer five pounds as a reward to anyone who will take Oliver off of their hands.

Oliver Twist

Chapter 1
A Hungry Orphan

Oliver Twist is born a sickly infant in a workhouse. The parish surgeon and a drunken nurse attend his birth. His mother kisses his forehead and dies, and the nurse announces that Oliver’s mother was found lying in the streets the night before. The workhouses that figure prominently in the first few chapters of the novel were institutions that the Victorian middle class established to raise poor children. Since it was believed that certain vices were inherent to the poor and that poor families fostered rather than discouraged such vices, poor husbands and wives were separated in order to prevent them from having children and expanding the lower class. Poor children were taken away from their parents in order to allow the state and the church to raise them in the manner they believed most appropriate. In the narrative, the workhouse functions as a sign of the moral hypocrisy of the working class. Mrs. Mann steals from the children in her care, feeding and clothing them inadequately. The Victorian middle class saw cleanliness as a moral virtue, and the workhouse was supposed to rescue the poor from the immoral condition of filth. However, the workhouse in Dickens’s novel is a filthy place Mrs. Mann never ensures that the children practice good hygiene except during an inspection. Workhouses were established to save the poor from starvation, disease, and filth, but in fact they end up visiting precisely those hardships on the poor. Furthermore, Mr. Bumble’s actions underscore middle-class hypocrisy, especially when he criticizes Oliver for not gratefully accepting his dire conditions. Bumble himself, however, is fat and well dressed, and the entire workhouse board is full of fat gentlemen who preach the value of a meager diet for workhouse residents.

The Power of Love

Dantes was time to leave Paris, So he traveled to Marseilles. The young man could not stop grieving over the loss of Valentine. In Marseilles, Maximilian went to visit his friends, while Dantes went to see Mercedes.
